Currently, PV technology provides the country with solutions to many issues such as high electricity prices, generation issues, work opportunities and long periods of loadshedding. Frequent power cuts are having a huge effect on companies who suffer from this interruption to power supply. Solar PV can be especially helpful for small businesses and shops by using it as a simple solution to back-up their offices.A system that is sized correctly to match the power demands of a business, and to factor in the time of day when that power is used – with solar panels to use the sun’s direct energy during the day and a battery bank to ensure power during power cuts or during peak tariff periods – is the way to go. Our training courses create the perfect entry point for anyone who wants to join this new industry.How solar power can help Zimbabwe’s electricity price problem The increased demand of power in Zimbabwe combined with its inability to meet the energy demand has resulted in some of the highest increases in electricity prices on the continent of Africa. In 2019 there was a 320% increase in electricity prices, and this was followed by another increase of 30% in 2021. This puts a huge financial strain on businesses and private citizens. Solar power can help alleviate these strains on both sides of the fence. The government and ZESA could take advantage of the country’s massive stores of solar radiation or sunshine (1900-2200 kWh/m2 annually) and use this to help supplement the disparity in production and demand for energy. Businesses and homeowners could use solar systems to reduce their reliance on the grid, which would in turn decrease electricity costs and reduce pressure on the grid. While it is not the only solution or the primary solution, solar power can relieve both citizens and business owners of some of the financial strains brought on by high electricity prices in Zimbabwe. World market: how the solar industry can grow and what to expect The world market for solar energy is growing rapidly. While hydropower and wind power are used as main sources of electricity, these sources can be unpredictable and unreliable. The total energy consumption of the world per year is about 17 000 TWh. In one year, a total of 2.2 TWh of solar radiation can fall on one square kilometre of land. With 15-20% of this radiation being converted into useful energy, we would need only 210 to250 km2 of desert region to have a global energy supply. This information means that a rise in solar power dependence is inevitable, and with it the growth of the solar industry world-wide. GREEN is currently leading a consortium of European solar and storage companies to venture into the Western African markets.
