The year 2020 has proved to be a very special and different year, with that said, it meant we had to adjust to the new reality. That meant making a few changes to how business is conducted. This year the Solar Show Africa 2020 was also different as it was a free-to-attend virtual conference and exhibition for the entire energy community. GREEN was also exhibiting and it was great e-meeting everyone and making new contacts.

For Tsakani Mashila our Junior Marketing Manager, this was her first time attending the Solar Show and this is what she had to say about her experience:

“ The Solar Show was a great experience, as I had the opportunity to network and connect with new people and getting to know more about the Solar PV industry”.

My biggest take from the Show was that you learn something new every day and you can never learn enough. The cool part of it all was that attending the Show was FREE and everything was done at the comfort of your home or office.

Amanda Dzivhani our Customer Relations Manager who has attended the actual Solar Show she found that this year’s show was great because one could actually schedule meetings and attend them on time. And from those meetings great and new partnerships were formed.

One partnership the Show brought us was with RenewSys. RenewSys is the renewable energy arm of the ENPEE Group, a diversified global conglomerate with a heritage of nearly 60 years of manufacturing excellence. They will be supplying us with training equipment for our new academy in Port Elizabeth.

The Solar Show 2020 was quite a success as we were able to make contact with old friends and partners, also having talks with old partners, and renewing old contacts. We looking forward to next year’s Solar Show, we can’t wait to see what the Show will be like.

Andre Wagener is an electrician, a company owner, an active member of the Electrical Contractors Association and a GREEN alumni. What is your company doing today?

GPA Electrical Contractors (PTY) Ltd.used to be an event power management and generator hire company. The company has been doing events for 20 years. Hiring to events that had over 40-50 thousand people. I am an electrician by trade and 2019 the company decided to expand their brand and go back to electrical.

First we have done a couple of backup systems, but we quickly recognised that we have to  install PV onto that. But before doing the installations, I wanted to have the knowledge on how to do that exactly.

And when I see how everything developed now with Covid, it was the best idea we had to focus more on the electrical side and not only depend on the event business.

Why did you register for the Solar Power Designer course?

I am new in the industry and I wanted to further my knowledge. The SuperSolarSchool with its focus on Basics and Installation gave me what I needed to start in the industry and the more I go into PV and I understood the installation as the complexity it is, and the more I learned the more I realized what I still have to learn.

I wanted to learn how to design and implement commercial PV systems, not only to design them myself, but also to understand the design of the engineers I am working with. I don’t want to rely on other companies to do the design for me, especially, when I have not the knowledge to understand what they do and identify errors.

 What did you expect from the course?

Basically, furthering my knowledge, to build up on what I learned during the SuperSolarSchool. The SuperSolarSchool was very hands-on and gave me a good insight in the PV industry, but I wanted to learn how to design bigger grid-tied PV systems or commercial PV systems.

What was most surprising of all the new things you learnt?

I never used a design software and thus I really enjoyed to work with the Valentin design software PV*SOL. I am quite a BC, before computer, guy and I am used to do calculations with a pen and a piece of paper. To learn how to use computer tools with online tutorials is often quite frustrating. But to learn how to design a PV systems with PV*SOL guided by an experienced PV planner really makes a difference.

And I really appreciate the knowledge of the trainers, Marius and Willem are very experienced guys and they know how to engage the participants. They do not stand in front of the class like puppets and teach the same work over and over, they interact, give room for discussions and make sure that everybody can follow the content.

Why should someone who is already doing installations attend this course?

A lot of the times the guys working in PV don’t know half the calculations and they don’t see the risks of an installation which is not properly calculated. A PV installer should understand the design and all involved risks to be able to avoid them. They should understand how to decide which components to use what are the effects of temperature and shading and what codes and legislations applies. And all this one can learn in the PV designer commercial course.

I think it’s essential for the installers to learn because, doing the work doesn’t mean you understand or fully comprehend it. I think that training and special certification of the industry is crucial for the PV Industry in general but for PV Installers in particular.

But not only for PV installers, the course is also perfect for engineers. I was sitting in the class with and engineer and he was thrilled about the content and all the knowledge he could gain. I mean only because you are engineer or electrician, this does not mean you know all, especially about photovoltaic.

How did the course bring you and your business forward?

The course enhanced my knowledge. Doing the course allows me to understand what is needed on a bigger commercial PV project compared to residential. Most people think it’s a couple of panels, throw them on the roof and then we go. I wish it was that easy, but it is not, one has to know what he does and this is what I learned in the training and my company will definitely benefit form all what I learned and the new contacts I made.

Surviving in a male-dominated industry and how I got into it

She is young, she is the only female and the whole industry is fairly new to her. Sounds challenging, doesn’t it? We have asked Etalvina Cossa, a young engineer from Mozambique, aged 23, to tell us more about her way into the renewable energy industry and how it is as a woman.

At age 10, Etalvina came in touch with renewable energies for the first time, through her father who worked for the Mozambican Ministry of Environment. She was very amazed by the environment and climate change. Her curiosity about the climate and the environment gave way to a love that gave her a very interesting perspective on the environment: seeing the environment as a house we all live in. This love opens her up to heartbreak when she sees people vandalizing and littering, she gained the love of the environment from her father and from reading about the environment and climate change. She found out about solar energy and her mind was blown away at how energy can be generated from the sun.

Growing up her mother wanted her to be a doctor, but she wanted a career in the renewable energy sector.

In University she studied a course in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management because that was the popular course to study at the time and when 80% of her classmates was specializing in oil resources, she decided to be brave and specialize in renewable energy. “I wanted to focus on something that will help sustain the environment and something I will be proud of in the future.” Another motivation that drives her is the social impact of renewable energy. Especially for Mozambique, where at present still only 16% of the population has access to electricity and the vast majority (70%) live in rural areas where only 5.7% use electricity for lighting, renewable energy can make a huge difference. “With Solar energy, I can put a smile on people’s faces after an installation I go to bed with the satisfaction that I brought happiness to other people’s lives with my work”.

In her words, she said, “my father was my biggest role model for me to choose the Renewable energy sector, as when I was young he would teach me games that would teach me a lot about the environment and the climate, of which I am now better than him at this work”. This is one exciting situation where the student has become the master.

Etalvina joined Logos Industries in October 2019. Logos Industries was founded as an electrical distributor in Mozambique in 2003. By now, they developed into one of the biggest renewable energy companies in the continent with 13 branches in seven African countries. Their services include sales, installation, operation & maintenance of solar products and projects. Etalvina applied for the position with no experience but, that did not stop her from knocking on the door. On her application, she highlighted that she could bring value to the company and all she needs is a chance to prove that. Her great motivation in applying for this post was “Know your value and your worth” and she still follows that. And Logos Industries was willing to grant her the chance. Currently, in Logos Industries she has her hand in every pie, she does almost everything from Sales, Management, Training, Installations, and assists in Projects.

But as the solar industry is a male-dominated industry, especially in the field of installations and projects, we wanted to know more about the challenges that Etalvina faces as a woman. She told us a story that probably many other women in similar positions can relate to. A client walked in and asked for someone to assist him. When Etalvina said that she could help, he said

“No, I need to speak to a man.”

She then called her colleague who was on holiday at the time and explained to him the situation. Her colleague then spoke to the client and said “ whatever you need assistance with, the lady right in front of you will help you with as she has the answers to anything you can ask.”

The biggest thing she took from that situation was that her colleagues do not see her as just a woman but as a part of the team, a team player. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry is challenging but she can enjoy the work thanks to her colleagues who are the most amazing people to work with. They show her respect, support, and treat her just like any other person in the office, and they do not make things difficult. The problem is with the male clients as they are undermining her just because she is a woman. But Etalvina shakes it off quite well, she believes that people who undermine other people based on their gender are “mentally poor” because they do not see the potential the person has but all they see is the gender.

The advice she would give to all young women who are looking to join a male-dominated industry is to stop focusing on the problem and rather focus on improving yourself. She stresses that one should not compare oneself and says

“Finally knowing your value as a person is the best thing to do for yourself as that helps you to focus on your strength and start making an impact and do your best.”

Learning is easy these days. The internet gives us access to knowledge and research from experts from all over the world. If a topic interests you, the means of becoming an expert in it are there; you only have to want it and get started.

Especially when changing careers or starting a career, it is your own responsibility to prepare yourself. Of course, you can’t know everything and reading books will not make up for experience on the job. But see it as a sign of respect for the workplace and a fail-safe way to boost your success.

After you have done your homework, do not feel afraid to ask the stupid question. There are often company or industry-specific ways to deal with things, specific language that is used or established processes that cannot be found in a book or on a website. Sometimes it is necessary to just bite the bullet and ask.

Bertha said, she did ask questions in a room full of engineers who rolled their eyes over her questions. But even if they laugh, so what?

There is something called “impostor syndrome”; many women and especially women of colour suffer from it. It is a psychological pattern that makes people doubt their own accomplishments, they do not believe in their own skills and constantly live with the fear of being exposed as a fraud. As a consequence, people put irrational pressure on themselves and limit their own capability.

Part of growing and developing your career further is overcoming such fears and doubts. Yes, you do need to be prepared but there is a limit to it. There is a point where only active participation brings you forward and asking questions is a great start to see that mistakes do not harm you but make you better.

When you are new in an industry, it is often difficult to see your own value. All the engineers know more, all other installers have more experience and you actually don’t belong to them. But that’s not true! Stop analysing your own shortcomings, focus on what you have and what you bring in.

Stop your inner impostor from holding you back and take your space. At the beginning you are over aware of your shortcomings and lack of knowledge. But at one point you have to let go of your fears and accept that there is this period of incompetence. Bertha says, “acknowledge the gap as first step to close it.”

And then focus on your strength and start making an impact. Coming from marketing? You probably have better communication skills than an engineer. Coming from management? Those messy technicians will see what real structure looks like! Coming fresh from varsity? You have an open mind and new ideas.

Networking can be a real career booster and LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools for networking. Brushing up your LinkedIn profile doesn’t take long but might open some interesting doors.

But networking is not about having the most LinkedIn contacts. Bertha made it very clear in the webinar that networking is a reciprocal flow of value. That means it is a give and take. For valuable networking, seek understanding, find synergies, and eventually find value together.

Not every connection is a big value right away but building a network is also about long-term planning. If an opportunity is not for you, pass it on and next time you might get an opportunity back. Collaboration and supporting each other brings you much further in most of the cases than competitive thinking and resentment.

After all the practical tips, the last one is about motivation. Find passion in what you are doing. Bertha said, at the end of her marketing career she was no longer excited for her daily job and she said that was her personal trigger for the career change. And when she looked at the energy industry, she was hooked by the socio-economic impact of energy access and the variety of jobs and opportunities that the industry offers. So, she invested in herself, built up the skills and brought herself to the top of the African Power Industry.

Feeling passionate about a job makes a huge difference in your approach. When you are new to the industry, you need to work extra hours to research, do your homework and close your knowledge gaps. You can’t get away without hard work, but it is your personal choice if you want to hate it or enjoy it and thrive.

The complete end of lockdown may be weeks or even months away, but that has not stopped us from pondering about a positive future and a return to normality. “When this is over”, that’s the thought on everyone’s minds, if not the words on their lips.  We are all looking forward to life after lockdown and this could be reverting back to normal life or better yet back to a new life.

With the Eskom power utility beginning to shutting down its old power plants, the power utility is struggling to supply South Africa with sufficient power. The corona lockdown has given us a break from the power cuts but as soon as the lockdown is over, the industry is getting back to the normal life, and load shedding will be back as well. It has already started.

Those frequent power cuts are costing businesses lots of money and almost all businesses need power. The economy already needs a power boost, and especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, our economy will need as much power as possible (mentally, financially and in form of electricity!) to get back into shape.

So far, there is no improvement of the power situation in sight. The Eskom power utility is battling to keep all the units of its biggest operational power plant open after being served with a compliance notice by South Africa’s environment ministry because of its high levels of air pollution.

Solar energy is one simple solution to these many problems: clean and permanent power at utility scale, for the industry, businesses, and private homes. The market is massive and offers many possibilities but most important the Covid-19 pandemic has not decreased the demand at all. All the conditions that make solar energy so attractive still apply. And with more and more people and industries noticing the potential, we can only expect the demand of solar installation staff, maintenance technicians, planners and designers, project managers etc to rise.

So, use the opportunity to begin your post-Covid life with something green, enter a new industry. Let’s use the change in our lives to really change something and leave the crisis stronger than we entered it.

Update: With lockdown level 3 we are allowed again to offer training! We have worked out a hygiene protocol, made a plan with our academy partners and since 1st June we offer trainings again. The group sizes are reduced according to the available training room so that we can guarantee 1.5 m distance between all participants at all times.

Corona crisis is affecting us all. We as a training provider which offers on-site courses also have to react. We are aware of the danger of the virus and want to help to flatten the curve. As a result, we have cancelled all our March trainings.

Dr. Michael Blank, Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana), Dipl.-Ing. Antje Klauss-Vorreiter and Prof. Dr. Yao Azoumah, both GREEN Solar Academy West Africa, launched the Academy on 25^th February 2020 in front of a selected audience of representants of the Ghanaian solar industry and local and international institutions working in photovoltaics in the region. The GREEN Solar Academy in Accra is the second GREEN Solar Academy in West Africa. Both are centrally managed by the GREEN Solar Academy West Africa, a Joint Venture of the GREEN Solar Academy PTY Ltd. (South Africa) and the Kya Energy Group (Togo).  Part of the ceremony was also the first presentation of the Solar Hub West Africa, a cluster of European and African solar institutions with the objective to jointly develop new ideas, projects and business models that lead to sustainable use of renewable energy, as a basis for a resilient economy and green growth in West Africa.

About the concept

The newly founded GREEN Solar Academy Ghana offers short courses in the field of solar photovoltaic. The aim is to equip entrepreneurs and company staff members with the necessary knowledge to get started in practice as fast as possible. High quality training in terms of applicability of training content and practical experience of lecturers is a key factor to meet the demand for skilled personnel in the rapidly growing solar industry in Ghana.

The course that is offered is a 5-day comprehensive training called “SuperSolarSchool”. It starts on an entry level and allows not only engineers and technicians to gain knowledge on solar technology but is open to any who is interested and ambitious to make first steps in the solar market. The topics covered include basics of solar energy, system types and components, planning and design of systems and a practical installation exercise on a training roof. At the end of the training, the goal is for the participants to have not only a comprehensive understanding of solar technology but also to be able to plan and install solar systems and to be ready to start their first projects. In order to reach the best possible ratio of the amount of knowledge transferred and sustainable learning, modern teaching methods and interactive training elements are used.

In almost 10 years in the African training market, Antje Klauss-Vorreiter and Vivian Blümel, the two founders of the GREEN Solar Academy Pty Ltd., built up training academies in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola and Mozambique. In 2011, the first training academy in South Africa under the name maxx-solar academy was founded with support from the German Solar Energy Society and the German company maxx-solar & energie. Since 2020 the academies operate under maxx-solar academy’s spin-off GREEN Solar Academy but are still managed centrally from the team in the headquarter in Weimar, Germany which also delivers the content of the lectures according to international quality standards. The training itself is performed by the local academies who know their country and participants best and can combine the German technology know-how with local experience.

Stepping into West Africa

West Africa became the focus of attention when the GREEN Solar Academy started a partnership with the Togolese KYA-Energy Group founded by Prof. Dr. Yao Azoumah end of 2018. With the founding of a joint venture between KYA-Energy Group and GREEN Solar Academy, the foundation for permanent activities in the region is laid, and with the Academy in Ghana, one of the most interesting and important markets of the region can be targeted.

And the demand is huge. The positive feedback of the  attendees at the launch and the feedback during the discussion following the official part reflected the current situation of the market: a lot of potential and at the same time a lack of skilled solar installers and training opportunities. Dr. Blank from the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana) opened the launch and praised the efforts of GREEN, „That investment in training will pave the way for more solar companies “.

And more companies are already on their way. Together with the GREEN Solar Academy, the Solar Hub West Africa was launched. Prof. Dr. Yao Azoumah explained “It is a cluster of European and West African companies with the joint goal of working together to develop new ideas, projects and business models that lead to sustainable use of renewable energy, as a basis for a resilient economy and green growth in West Africa.” One of the goals is to share infrastructure and resources to support the growth of the solar industry.  Jan IJspeert, CEO of the German manufacturer BAE Batteries, congratulated the team on the official launch and said “working together on a new market entry brings many advantages, especially when local expertise becomes accessible for European companies.” The GREEN Solar Academy contributes with capacity building and training of the necessary staff.

So far 8 Ghanaian and 13 European companies and institutions have joined the Solar Hub West Africa, among them Tino Solutions, Takoradi University, Macht Energy, as well as the German BAE Batteries GmbH, the Germany Energy Society and of course also the South African GREEN Solar Academy. 06 of the local companies also agreed to partner in a job creation programme for youth lead by the German Solar Energy Society DGS to provide internships to solar newcomers from universities to support them with the entry in a professional solar career.
