We struck gold with our HIDDEN GEMS Challenge

We were hearing from employers in the solar industry that they were struggling to find suitable staff in key positions; our campaign focused on women as the ideal candidates to fill those roles. We published a series of articles and career portraits to spread the message that solar is about more than just installation and shed some light on the variety of jobs available.

We maintained that women bring a different energy and talent for certain tasks in the PV industry that can add real value and increase the overall effectiveness of a company, simply by widening the perspective and adding a different point of view during negotiations and sales talks.

So, we challenged our male alumni network to sign up their Most Valued Female (a colleague, a daughter, a wife or friend), the HIDDEN GEM who would be brilliant in a PV business, to one of our trainings, with the promise of tempting prizes for the alumni who succeeded in encouraging the most women to sign up for a course during the campaign.

And they came to the party in the best possible way![/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=””]

While previous campaigns have met with success, they did not achieve the objective of bringing women aboard our trainings in the way that HIDDEN GEMS did. For every 1 woman registering for training in months gone by, we had 29 sign up for a course during August! That’s an increase of almost 3000% … a simply incredible number!

We were able to ascertain that 29% of the people who engaged with our organic Facebook posts during this period were women, mostly aged 25 to 34, while engagement with our sponsored posts amongst females rose to 47% compared to just under 30% at any other time.

And we had FOUR women at one SuperSolarSchool in Johannesburg during September and THREE on the same course in Cape Town during November!

In years to come, we will continue to refine and build upon the message we broadcast this year: women are wanted, and needed, in the solar industry!

Our goal is to deliver excellent trainings, so we pay great attention not only to what’s on the slide but also how it is presented. To effectively train solar installers, GREEN Solar Academy must first effectively train its trainers! And this needs to happen on a regular basis

Once a year, trainers from GREEN Solar Academies all over Africa are invited to the Training of Trainers event, a 3-day workshop where we top up on skills, work on new training courses and content, For you the case is clear, there is no better way to save money than a PV system but what do you say when the bank and the client ask for proof in hard facts? They want to hear about the NPV, the IRR, and LCoE. If you don’t know how to answer these questions, then this course was made for you.

Conventional financing metrics are not appropriate tools for assessing the real savings for businesses of installing PV. In the development of this training, we worked closely with a man who understands both the application, sizing, and installation issues of different types of solar systems as well as the world of financing, someone able to look at the situation from both sides of the coin.

African solar training provider GREEN Solar Academy is going one step further in its commitment to preparing installers for a successful career in solar energy by launching an internship programme.

GREEN Solar Academy recognizes that training is only the first step towards finding a job in the solar industry. Together with Peak Power Solutions, a well-established solar company based in Pretoria, Gauteng, they will now offer practical experience alongside training on the job. Peak Power Solutions is headed by Willem van Schalkwyk, a GREEN alumni who started his career in the solar industry by participating in a GREEN training course in 2014, and who knows about the struggles new solar installers face.

The feedback GREEN receives from the +3600 people they have trained is that finding qualified staff is a bottleneck for the growth of the solar sector.

Due to this fact, the demand for solar currently exceeds the supply available. And on the flip side, newcomers struggle to get up to speed to fill the available positions, making the jump from training into employment difficult. An intermediate step is needed where the new graduates have a safe space to put into practice what they learned in their training.

Interns will be exposed to all facets of solar installation, from monitoring inventory for upcoming projects to the physical mounting of racking, modules, and electrical equipment of both residential and commercial systems. In addition to securing invaluable on-the-job experience, incumbents will attend ongoing training sessions on new products, methodology, and safety. At every stage, the installer company pledges to offer guidance and support with the intern’s personal development as a qualified PV installer.  The partnership benefits both parties, in that the intern may well go on to secure permanent employment with the internship company, and the industry gains another solar professional with solid experience.

The initiative will become a permanent value-added service offered by GREEN to its alumni as part of their solar training, connecting suitable staff with eager solar companies. At least one alumni will be welcomed on board as an intern with a partner company every three months, and this number is set to increase as more alumni companies sign up to the initiative and make capacity for interns. The programme is open to all GREEN alumni, an alumni being a graduate of one of our courses, and will partner recent graduates of our trainings with the established companies of other GREEN alumni.

GREEN Solar Academy held our first ever Financing of PV Systems course on 26 August 2021 at the Parktonian Hotel in Johannesburg. Dr. Philip Olivier and Vishay Rabbipal held the course with 7 eager and excited participants. The participants were involved in a multitude of working fields such as sales, solar installation, project management, and more. And they all came ready to learn about the mysteries of finance in solar PV.

Some content highlights for the participants were the sections focused on calculating the financial viability of PV systems, understanding tax benefits of PV systems, and financing of PV projects (which was presented by ABSA’s Vishay Rabbipal). The course was full of periods of in-depth discussion, as each participant was given a chance to ask questions on the different topics in the course, and Dr. Olivier and Vishay were able to answer them all.

Vishay’s involvement in the course is a big sign of what is to come for solar installers in the future. ABSA has taken a vested interest in the financing of PV systems and has started to develop its own procedures and standards for financing PV systems, both commercial and residential. ABSA does its own plausibility simulations, pricing benchmark, solar tech standard check, installer vetting, and more. Vishay was able to go deeper into all these aspects of financing PV systems in the course and even presented some examples of successful clients of ABSA’s PV financing. The participants found his presentation enlightening and got connected with Vishay through this course.

After all the discussion, shared knowledge, and feedback it is clear that this course is crucial for the future of any solar PV business in South Africa.  What did you study, and did you plan to end up in the solar industry? 

I studied Electrical Engineering and specialized in Process Instrumentation. I also studied Business Management. To be honest, I knew nothing about RE or the solar industry! I started my career as a trainee in the mines, did a bit of water purification, and then moved to the manufacturing industry; during that whole time, the solar industry never crossed my mind but today I am very glad that it did! 

How did you become involved with GREEN Solar Academy? 

An ex-business partner and I were passionate about empowering people with the skills and knowledge that would enable them to become professional installers. At that time, we were not able to realize this dream without some help from industry professionals. We did a bit of research, discovered GREEN Solar Academy, and contacted them about a possible partnership. 

 What is your job / what does your job involve now? 

My current role is the Head of the Local Control Room (LCR) at Enel Green Power. The LCR is a monitoring and control room that oversees the performance of our wind and solar plants by detecting and verifying issues, gathering data for reporting and performance optimization. 

 What are the best parts of your job? 

I have been in this position for just over 4 years and being able to lead a young most female team, and watch them grow and reach their goals has been very inspirational to me. I also had the privilege of running an internship programme for 3 years before the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed me to shape the young minds of students who were just at the beginning of their careers – that was a very fulfilling part of my job. Traveling all over the world has also been an extraordinary highlight of my job! 

Which parts do you enjoy the least? 

The meetings! 

 What advice can you give to people who want to enter the solar industry – what is the best entry point in your opinion. And do you believe attitude is as important as aptitude? 

With solar becoming more affordable and it being so easily adaptable for long-term growth, there are many opportunities for investors in rural and off-grid household PV systems. If you’re not an investor and want to start a career in the solar industry then the best approach would be to take a course in solar installations such as those that Green Solar Academy offers, even for inexperienced people. 

 I think attitude shapes our experiences and determines the reality we live in. Opportunities will avail themselves by the quality of our perceptions. But of course, aptitude can’t be devalued because experience and skills are critical for many roles: you wouldn’t want to have an unqualified doctor operate on you purely because he has a positive attitude. 

Are there any aspects of your job that you do differently than a man would? 

My current role was previously filled by a man and I believe that my people and management skills were very different to what the team had become accustomed to. I have a more relaxed approach to managing the team, which allows them to feel safe to share their ideas without fear of rejection, repercussions, or any other forms of dysfunction in the workplace. 

Final thoughts on being a woman in your role?  

There are many misconceptions about my ability to do the job because I am a woman. Engineering is still a highly male-dominated profession, so it takes more effort than a man to be respected and develop a good reputation in the industry.  I do gain a great sense of purpose and pride from serving as a role model to and inspiring, a new generation of women in the RE industry.
