PV Off-Grid Technician

The course takes the learner through the complete process of off-grid PV system installation and maintenance, starting from the basics, over design and identification of design parameters during a site survey up to installation and maintenance incl. trouble shooting. It also includes business aspects, guides learners on the importance of organisation and documentation of projects and finally concludes with a whole module on business practices in order to enable learners to found their own solar business.

Chapter 1 is an introduction to renewable energy in general and solar energy specifically. It deals with the general functionality of photovoltaic technology, looks at the single components, how they are connected to form solar systems and which limitations there are.

Chapter 2 focuses on the sizing of off-grid PV systems. It starts with a general overview and then goes into detail on the sizing procedure and selection criteria for every system component.

Chapter 3 deals exclusively with the topic of site survey and load assessments which are integral steps for the planning of off-grid PV systems. It starts with the theory and ends with a case study of a site survey for an Ethiopian family home.

Chapter 4 is about the installation of off-grid PV systems. It deals with the installation itself but also other relevant topics such as preparation steps, PPE or safe handling of components.

Chapter 5 is very technical and deals with all procedures that come after the actual installation: PV system commissioning, how to find faults, performing system maintenance, testing and also how to involve the customer into these processes.

Chapter 6 gives insights into the possibilities of online monitoring, how to interpret results and deals with the significance of proper project documentation.

Chapter 7 is about business and communication and provides basic knowledge that is relevant for business owners and managers
