Description

Compliance is one of the fastest-growing pain points in South Africa's solar market. As installation volumes rise, so do opinions and requirements from electricians, municipalities, inspectors, and other stakeholders. Professionals who can confidently commission, test, certify, and navigate compliance requirements are increasingly in demand.

This one-day course gives you a thorough working knowledge of the key wiring standards that apply to PV installations: SANS 10142-1, SANS 60364-7-712, and NRS regulations. We don't just present the standards - we work through how to interpret and apply them in real conditions, including the compliance grey areas that trip up even experienced installers.

The course is heavily practical. In our workshop, you'll carry out commissioning and testing procedures on real systems, and work through the preparation of a comprehensive test report required for a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). We cover everything the CoC process demands: SSEG applications, PV GreenCard submissions, single-line diagrams, component labelling, and correct site documentation.

You’ll leave with the skills and confidence to commission and test PV systems correctly, complete the required compliance documentation, better understand how the key standards apply in real-world installations, and protect your professional reputation.

Target Audience

Compliance for PV Systems is aimed at qualified professionals working with solar installations:

  • Electricians looking to add solar compliance and CoC capability to their offering
  • Solar installers with site experience who want to understand and advise on compliance requirements
  • Professional and registered engineers (Pr Eng) involved in PV projects
  • Municipality inspectors assessing PV installations

Main Topics

The course focuses on the practical application of PV wiring regulations and compliance procedures:

  • Overview of relevant standards and their implications for PV installations: SANS 10142-1, SANS 60364-7-712, and NRS 097
  • Wiring in practice: inspection of a demo installation and compliance assessment against specific site conditions
  • Critical compliance topics: neutral-earth bonding, surge protection, and battery safety
  • Commissioning and testing procedures: string voltage and polarity, insulation resistance, bonding resistance, earth-neutral test, anti-islanding test (practical exercise)
  • Test report completion and CoC preparation (practical exercise)
  • SSEG application requirements and PV GreenCard submission documentation

Prerequisites

This is an advanced, specialised course. Participants should have either a formal electrical background (certified electricians or electrical engineers with practical experience) or be solar installers with meaningful site experience.

Please note: Only registered electricians are legally permitted to work on distribution boards and issue Certificates of Compliance. This course provides valuable knowledge for all participants, but does not authorise unregistered persons to carry out tasks that fall outside their qualification. Legal restrictions apply.

Registration Process

When you click on REGISTER, you will need to provide all of your particulars in order to be issued with a pro-forma invoice. Your attendance of any training or assessment can only be confirmed on full payment of the invoice. Please consult our T&Cs for more information.

Accreditation

  • International accreditation by the German Solar Energy Society (DGS e.V)
  • 1 CPD credit by SAIEE

Your Next Step

Compliance for PV Systems is a specialist qualification that strengthens your position in the market. Here's where participants typically go from here:

  • Get the PV GreenCard Qualification. It’s a low hanging fruit for an electrician and opens opportunities to do more in solar than just the paperwork. Do the PV GreenCard Assessment if you have solar specific knowledge or do SuperSolarSchool first.
  • Add a maintenance offering. Compliance and maintenance are natural partners - many clients who need a CoC also need ongoing servicing. PV System O&M gives you the skills to offer both, making you a more complete service provider.
