GREEN PV Mounter Certification: Practical Solar Training for Beginners
GREEN PV Mounter: Learn the skills the industry needs
How can installation companies be confident that new team members are prepared for the work they will actually do? The answer is: the right training by a partner you can trust.

For employers, finding candidates with qualifications is one thing. Finding people who can handle PV equipment, follow installation procedures and contribute effectively on site is another.
The GREEN PV Mounter Certification addresses this challenge. Developed by GREEN Solar Academy, it combines foundational PV knowledge, hands-on training and a final assessment to establish a practical entry-level standard for solar mounting work.
The idea is simple: Train people for the work they will actually do.
A qualification is valuable. But can you do the job?

Traditional occupational qualifications play an important role in developing South Africa’s skilled workforce. They provide structured learning, recognised standards and opportunities for professional development.
But a broad technical qualification doesn’t necessarily tell an employer whether someone is prepared for a specific role on a PV installation team. Not everyone on a solar installation team needs to be an electrician, system designer or fully qualified PV installer.
Installation companies also need skilled PV Mounters: people who can handle modules correctly, work with mounting systems, follow site safety procedures and support installation activities under the supervision of a responsible installer.
PV Mounter is a distinct role with its own skills and responsibilities. Yet newcomers are often faced with training options that either cover broad technical subjects or aim directly at becoming a fully qualified installer.
The GREEN PV Mounter Certification recognises the value of this entry-level role and focuses on firm entry level skills.
Rather than covering everything about solar, we provide basic knowledge and emphasise practical skills relevant to mounting work.
Built on industry experience, designed for real work
What should someone know and be able to do before joining a professional PV installation team?
That question is at the heart of the GREEN PV Mounter Certification.
GREEN Solar Academy has been training solar professionals in Southern Africa since 2013. More than 10,000 participants have completed GREEN training, including over 1,200 PV GreenCard-accredited installers.
Our trainers are experienced solar professionals, and our alumni work throughout the industry as installers, engineers, project managers and business owners.

As Antje Klauss-Vorreiter, GREEN CEO and co-founder, explains: “Our alumni are not only well known in the PV industry – they are part of the industry, working across the sector in different roles and companies.”
This connection to the industry helps GREEN understand the skills installation companies need and translate them into relevant training.
Participants work with actual PV modules, mounting systems, tools and installation equipment. They learn the principles behind the work and apply them through hands-on exercises.
For beginners, this makes solar technology tangible. Instead of spending months studying before touching a PV module, they can start developing practical skills from the beginning.
Not just trained. Certified.
There is an important difference between attending a course and earning a certification.
Training develops knowledge and skills. Certification adds an assessment against a defined standard.
To become a GREEN Certified PV Mounter, candidates complete foundational PV training, attend practical PV Mounter training and pass the GREEN PV Mounter Exam.
The exam assesses technical knowledge and understanding of installation practices. Combined with the practical training, it provides evidence of structured preparation for a specific industry role.
Successful candidates receive a GREEN Certificate of Achievement, endorsed by the German Solar Energy Society (DGS e.V.).
For employers, this provides a useful benchmark when recruiting new team members, selecting subcontractors or developing existing staff. Rather than relying on course attendance alone, they can look for candidates who have completed relevant practical training and passed a defined assessment.
The certification doesn’t replace site-specific induction, supervision or further experience. Nor does it qualify someone to independently install and commission complete PV systems.
It establishes a realistic first professional milestone, with skills and responsibilities appropriate to a PV Mounter.

The best way to learn solar? Start doing it.
Solar installation is practical work. And practical skills are best developed through practice.
That’s why the GREEN PV Mounter pathway combines essential theory with intensive hands-on training.
The goal isn’t to turn a beginner into an expert in a few days. It’s to build a solid foundation, develop useful skills and prepare them to gain experience in a professional installation team.
Your pathway to becoming a GREEN Certified PV Mounter
The certification consists of three steps. The two training components can be completed in either order, giving organisations and participants flexibility in how they get started.
Step 1: Build your solar knowledge
Choose a foundational training option:
- Solar 101: Two days of classroom learning introducing solar electricity, PV components and installation principles.
- Principles of PV Systems eLearning: An online alternative that allows participants to build their knowledge at their own pace.
- PV Off-Grid Technician eLearning: Another online option covering foundational PV knowledge and off-grid system principles.
These courses help beginners understand how a PV system works and how the different components fit together.

Step 2: Get hands-on with PV Mounter training
The two-day practical PV Mounter course introduces participants to the equipment, tools and procedures used in professional solar installations.
Participants practise handling PV modules, working with roof mounting systems and following installation procedures. The training also covers essential site safety and practical Working at Heights activities.
The emphasis is on learning by doing, with guidance from experienced trainers.

Step 3: Pass the GREEN PV Mounter Exam
After completing both training components, candidates take the online GREEN PV Mounter Exam, available on demand.
The open-book, multiple-choice assessment covers mounting systems, module handling, site safety, basic electrical principles and residential PV installation practices.
Candidates need a minimum score of 50% to pass.
Successful candidates earn their GREEN PV Mounter Certification, demonstrating that they have completed practical training and met the required knowledge assessment standard.

A starting point for solar careers and workforce development
Building a competent solar workforce does not mean every newcomer or employee needs to begin by training as a fully qualified installer.
Effective installation teams rely on people with different responsibilities and levels of expertise, while careers in the industry often develop in stages.
The GREEN PV Mounter Certification provides an accessible entry-level standard for individuals who want to develop practical skills and for companies recruiting, onboarding or upskilling staff. It is also suitable for organisations preparing groups of newcomers for opportunities in the solar industry.
With experience and further training, PV Mounters can progress towards more advanced responsibilities and the SAPVIA PV GreenCard Installer Certification.
For professionals developing specialist expertise in commercial and industrial PV system design, GREEN also offers the GREEN C&I PV Designer Certification.
This staged approach helps individuals start at an appropriate level and allows companies to develop skills according to the responsibilities their teams need to fulfil.
Newcomers do not need to know everything about solar from the outset to make a valuable contribution. A solid foundation, relevant practical skills and a clear understanding of responsibilities provide a practical basis for further development.
Better skills.
Stronger teams.
A better solar industry.
The future of solar depends not only on how many people enter the industry, but also on how well they are prepared for the work.
The GREEN PV Mounter Certification gives beginners a practical entry into solar and employers a consistent benchmark for entry-level mounting skills.
By connecting training to a defined industry role, it helps people develop the skills that matter on site and provides a foundation for further professional development.
