You might simply be ready for a different first step.

Not ready for the PV GreenCard? Good.

Not everyone needs to be a master installer. There’s real skill in being the person who can arrive on site, understand the job and get to work.

You want to get into solar.

You want to work on installations, understand what the team is doing and be useful on site. So, naturally, you start looking at the PV GreenCard.

But do you actually need to become a PV GreenCard Installer yet? Maybe not.

Think about the job you actually want to do

Imagine arriving on site as part of a PV installation team. The system has been designed and your team leader or site foreman is directing the installation.

You’re not responsible for designing, connecting or signing off the system.

But you are expected to know what you’re doing.

You can follow installation and wiring diagrams, handle components safely, install mounting structures, secure PV modules and run DC cabling confidently. You don’t need someone teaching you the basics on site.

That’s a real level of skill – and it deserves to be recognised.

That’s where the GREEN PV Mounter Certification fits

We saw a gap between starting out in solar and being ready for installer-level certification.

A PV Mounter needs enough theory to understand the system they’re working on, and the practical skills to contribute confidently and safely on site.

That’s why the certification combines: Solar theory + practical PV Mounter training + certification exam.

For newcomers, we often recommend starting with the practical. Get onto the training roof, work with the components and see how an installation comes together. Then the theory has context.

Complete the learning, pass the GREEN PV Mounter Exam, and earn your GREEN PV Mounter Certification.

By the way, you can achieve this certification in as little as 5 days

What exactly should a certified PV Mounter be able to do?

The certification brings foundational PV knowledge together with practical installation skills.

That includes understanding PV fundamentals, components and system configurations alongside practical competencies such as:

  • Working safely on a PV installation site
  • Preparing the roof and installation area
  • Installing mounting structures
  • Positioning and clamping PV modules
  • Reading and applying installation and wiring diagrams
  • Running DC cabling and making MC4 connections
  • Handling PV components safely

The important distinction is responsibility.

A PV Mounter contributes to the installation. A PV Mounter is not responsible for connecting and signing off the complete electrical system.

And that distinction matters when you’re deciding what training and certification you actually need.

What about the PV GreenCard?

The PV GreenCard remains an important milestone for people progressing towards broader PV installer competence.

But it doesn’t have to be your first milestone.

If your goal is to work confidently as part of an installation team, you may not yet need the broader theory, calculations and responsibilities that come with installer-level competence.

Your starting point should match the work you’re preparing to do.

The PV GreenCard can come later, when your experience, responsibilities and goals make it the right next step.

A more accessible first certification

Cost matters when you’re starting out.

Choose Principles of PV Systems (eLearning) + PV Mounter practical training + the GREEN PV Mounter Exam, and the complete certification pathway comes in at under R7,000.

Or invest just a bit more and swap the eLearning for our Solar 101 as a live training alternative.

You don’t need to learn everything at once. Build the skills that match the responsibility you’re ready for.

Start with the skills you need now. Get them recognised. Then keep building.
