Description

As more PV systems get installed across South Africa, the demand for qualified maintenance is growing fast. And with it, a real business opportunity arises for installers and technicians who can offer ongoing service contracts. System owners on the other hand need trained teams who can protect performance and reduce downtime.

This one-day course covers everything a solar maintenance technician needs to inspect, maintain and service solar systems correctly and safely, following the principles of IEC 62446-2.

A key focus is understanding roles and limits of responsibility: knowing which tasks can be carried out by a general maintenance officer, and which require escalation to a qualified electrician or structural specialist.

By the end of the day you'll be able to plan maintenance schedules, interpret monitoring data, complete maintenance logbooks and carry out routine corrective maintenance. We also share practical tools such as checklists, schedules, and documentation templates that you can put to work immediately.

The course is designed for systems ranging from 20 kW to 1 MW, though the same principles apply to smaller residential systems.

Main Topics

  • Maintenance procedures, needs and scheduling frequency
  • Visual inspection and preventative maintenance of mechanical components to IEC 62446-2 standards including HV batteries (practical exercise)
  • Corrective maintenance and component replacements (practical exercise)
  • Maintenance logbooks, service reports, checklists, and documentation templates
  • Responsibilities and limits of authority: what installers may do, and when to escalate to an electrician or specialist
  • Basics of online monitoring and interpreting system performance data

Prerequisites

No electrical qualification is required. This course is open to anyone responsible for or interested in maintaining solar PV systems.

But please note: only qualified and registered electrical personnel may carry out work on electrical installations, incl. PV systems; in accordance with the OHSA 85 of 1993 and the EIR (2009), such work must be performed by a registered electrician or under their direct supervision.

Target Audience

PV System O&M is valuable for anyone who needs to keep solar systems running reliably:

  • Solar installers looking to add maintenance services and recurring revenue to their business
  • Maintenance technicians working on commercial or industrial sites with PV installations
  • Facilities managers and caretakers responsible for solar systems at malls, offices, or covered parking
  • Electricians expanding their solar service offering

Accreditation

International accreditation by the German Solar Energy Society (DGS e.V).

Registration Process

When you click on REGISTER, you will need to provide all of your particulars in order to be issued with a pro-forma invoice. Your attendance of any training or assessment can only be confirmed on full payment of the invoice. Please consult our T&Cs for more information.

Your Next Step

O&M gives you the skills to service what's already in the field. Here's how it fits into a broader solar career:

  • New to solar altogether? If you're coming to this course without a formal solar background, PV Mounter will give you the full installation foundation that makes your maintenance work even more effective.
  • Ready to go deeper on compliance? As an electrician you can specialise even more. Compliance for PV Systems is a natural companion course, and a growing revenue opportunity for technicians who can certify what they maintain.
