CURRENT AND PAST CLIENTS

Sunergy Zimbabwe is a Zimbabwean solar company. They have two main fields of activity: hardware supply especially for off-grid applications and energy consultancy with expert advice and energy audits. They specialise in off-grid solar systems and have a solid track record of off-grid PV installations.
In 2017, we offered the first trainings together under the name of maxx-solar academy. The head of the GREEN Solar Academy Zimbabwe is Dave Mathews, one of the directors of Sunergy.
Solar Power: an effective way to get around loadshedding
The solar industry has a large potential to grow in Zimbabwe. Currently, PV technology provides the country with solutions to many issues such as high electricity prices, generation issues, work opportunities and long periods of loadshedding.
Frequent power cuts are having a huge effect on companies who suffer from this interruption to power supply. Solar PV can be especially helpful for small businesses and shops by using it as a simple solution to back-up their offices.
A system that is sized correctly to match the power demands of a business, and to factor in the time of day when that power is used – with solar panels to use the sun’s direct energy during the day and a battery bank to ensure power during power cuts or during peak tariff periods – is the way to go.
Our training courses create the perfect entry point for anyone who wants to join this new industry.
How solar power can help Zimbabwe’s electricity price problem
The increased demand of power in Zimbabwe combined with its inability to meet the energy demand has resulted in some of the highest increases in electricity prices on the continent of Africa. In 2019 there was a 320% increase in electricity prices, and this was followed by another increase of 30% in 2021. This puts a huge financial strain on businesses and private citizens.
Solar power can help alleviate these strains on both sides of the fence. The government and ZESA could take advantage of the country’s massive stores of solar radiation or sunshine (1900-2200 kWh/m2 annually) and use this to help supplement the disparity in production and demand for energy. Businesses and homeowners could use solar systems to reduce their reliance on the grid, which would in turn decrease electricity costs and reduce pressure on the grid.
While it is not the only solution or the primary solution, solar power can relieve both citizens and business owners of some of the financial strains brought on by high electricity prices in Zimbabwe.
World market: how the solar industry can grow and what to expect
The world market for solar energy is growing rapidly. While hydropower and wind power are used as main sources of electricity, these sources can be unpredictable and unreliable. The total energy consumption of the world per year is about 17 000 TWh. In one year, a total of 2.2 TWh of solar radiation can fall on one square kilometre of land. With 15-20% of this radiation being converted into useful energy, we would need only 210 to250 km2 of desert region to have a global energy supply. This information means that a rise in solar power dependence is inevitable, and with it the growth of the solar industry world-wide.
GREEN is currently leading a consortium of European solar and storage companies to venture into the Western African markets. We are continuously looking for partners in the industry who would like to enter or establish themselves in an African market using our courses as an entry point and offer different ways of cooperation. We use our experience not only in training but also in wholesale and project development in Africa and Europe to shape and manage multinational projects around renewable energy topics.
Overall, solar power has been in common usage since 2013 and this is growing rapidly, with countries like China, Japan, Germany and the United States leading the way. You can join this renewable energy revolution and it can all start here with GREEN.
Solar power can help save Zimbabwe’s business sector
Due to the generation issues in Zimbabwe, the business sector is suffering. According to a survey by allAfrica, a typical business is losing around ZW$2,5 million in annual sales due to the power outages. This is not likely to improve as the prolonged power cuts can last up to 18 hours a day due to the struggling power sector (like Kariba Power Station).
These power cuts have also resulted in a large decline in labour productivity, with about 87% of the surveyed business’ confirming that the increase in power outages had reduced their labour productivity. Businesses are forced to remain idle during power cuts (with most happening during the week during working hours). This means that businesses need to compensate on the weekends or outside of normal working hours, which results in large bills of overtime pay so that they can meet normal output levels.
The introduction of solar power into the business sector will save businesses massive amounts of money by compensating for power outages which happen during the day when the sun is out. Businesses can also use solar PV back-battery systems to keep themselves online even at night, as well as store electricity in batteries which can then be used when loadshedding strikes.
The power of solar in the business sector is summed up quite nicely by Dr. Philip Olivier, the CEO of Olivia Energy Solutions in South Africa, who says, “Any business in Africa that is not investing in Solar, is throwing money away!”.
Trusted Training Provider since 2012
Following the approach of the German Solar Energy Society DGS, we started our trainings in South Africa in 2012, under the banner of maxx-solar academy. Over time, we founded branches in neighbouring countries and improved the course programme with every training we offered.
The result is an academy that follows a unique approach. We work closely with our trainers to develop our courses. The majority of our trainers own their own PV company, so we can ensure that the trainings are 100% practice relevant. All training courses have a significant share of practical exercises and combine modern teaching methods with time-efficient learning.
To go even further, we have created Africa’s largest network of PV Installers. We keep in touch with our graduates via frequent online meetings and help them to connect with each other and important players in the industry.
Become a Professional PV Installer: International training experience
PV Installations are not rocket science. Nevertheless, you should know what you are doing so that you can stand out from the masses. Our training courses equip you with the necessary skills and certification, and are accredited by the German Solar Energy Society DGS.
Our trainings are not only trusted by individuals and newly-founded businesses: municipalities and corporates also choose GREEN Solar Academy to train their staff and achieve official PV installer certification. For example, we developed a training course for the City of Tshwane in Gauteng province, South Africa, to teach their own staff members and trained their staff on how to teach the course material. We also offered a training for youth funded by the Social Development Fund to introduce them to career opportunities in the solar branch.
The GREEN team also brings with it a lot of international experience gathered while conducting training courses in Germany and other countries. They have realised trainings and projects in South America, Europe, Asia and Africa, many of which were executed on behalf of the German Solar Energy Society DGS. The topics were mostly teaching and off-grid and back-up solar technology.
As a result of all the experience we have amassed and our unique approach, you can expect a high level of quality and professionalism in all our training courses. For us, the most important goal is to support your career in the solar industry and make it as easy as possible to find your personal way in renewable energy.

Despite Namibia’s current energy issues and its dependence on Eskom’s supply from South Africa, there are many opportunities in which the country can build its solar PV industry and have a positive effect on the country and environment.
Using solar power can have huge potential for supplying directly where the consumption takes place. For example, solar power can help safari lodges and farms reduce diesel costs and even replace loud diesel generators. Solar power can also help reduce energy costs in mining and provide industry and businesses that require constant power with power using a UPS system. There are currently examples of how solar PV is assisting Namibia using three types of systems; a 5 kWp system in Swakopmund installed by Atlantic Solar, an off-grid system provides electricity for the research centre in the middle of the desert, and a grid-tied utility scale as power generation plant installed by Hopsol.
All of these developments in the solar PV industry are poised to help Namibia begin to solve its energy crisis by supplementing their power production and hopefully providing power to its prioritised 2879 rural localities and other regions where hospitals, schools and other amenities are located.
Is there a market for solar PV in Namibia, are there PV programmes available, are solutions for every requirement available, does PV have government support and technical and legislative back falls? Yes, to all.
So why wait? Sign-up today and become part of GREEN.
