Help us shape the eMobility training you need
Is it time for EV infrastructure training in South Africa?
Electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer a distant trend. They’re on our roads, in our newsfeeds, and increasingly, in conversations with clients. As demand grows, so does the need for the infrastructure to support them. But is South Africa ready?
At GREEN Solar Academy, we’re considering the development of a dedicated EV infrastructure training course—focused on the planning, installation, and integration of EV charging systems. This post unpacks the factors driving this conversation—and why it might be the right time to get ahead.
Challenges and Considerations in South Africa
1. Energy Supply Constraints
Despite ongoing efforts to stabilise the electricity grid, load shedding continues to be a reality. For EV infrastructure, this means grid-connected charging stations could be unreliable – unless properly planned, designed, and, in some cases, supplemented with off-grid or solar-powered solutions.
2. High Vehicle Costs
South Africans are keen on electric vehicles, but upfront costs remain a barrier. However, the market is shifting. Government incentives are emerging, and new models are being introduced at more accessible price points. This makes planning for growth essential – especially for forward-thinking businesses and municipalities.
3. Infrastructure Gaps
While major urban centres are seeing increased charging station rollouts, rural and peri-urban areas remain underserved. Closing this gap requires skilled technicians, planners, and electricians who can design and install infrastructure that meets local needs.

South Africa’s EV wave isn’t coming… it’s already here! Electric minibus taxis and standard buses are already in operation. Will the infrastructure be developed quickly enough to ensure seamless operation?
What kind of training is needed?
If we develop an EV infrastructure course, it should cover more than just charger installation. Here’s where we believe training is most needed:
- Technical understanding of AC and DC charging systems
- Grid impact and integration for residential, commercial and municipal clients
- Load management and off-grid/solar hybrid solutions
- Regulations and safety standards
- Site assessment and system sizing
- EV charger installation and maintenance
- Charging station design
- Civil and electrical infrastructure planning
But we don’t want to assume – we want to hear from you.
Tell us what you need
We’re not launching a course just yet. But we are thinking ahead—and we want your input to help shape it.
-
- Have customers approached you about EV charging yet?
- What kind of training or skills do you feel you need?
- Where do you see the biggest opportunity—or the biggest gap?
