Solar Online Exam for PV Installers and Designers
GREEN Online Exam
After successful completion of training, participants of the professional courses can sign up for an online exam to receive a Certificate of Achievement. The qualification received is certified “GREEN PV Designer” or “GREEN PV Installer”. The certificates are jointly issued by DGS, the German Solar Energy Society, and GREEN Solar Academy.
Exam Procedure
The exam is taken online, participants don’t have to be present at the academy. The exam takes place over a weekend and is an open book exam. All course handouts, books and the internet can be used, as we want to simulate real-life conditions for the exam – and wouldn’t you consult books and colleagues when working on a tricky problem?
Participants receive access to the exam portal via email on a Friday, and they then have the whole weekend to work on their exam; exams must be submitted by 6pm on a Sunday night.
Which exam is right for you?
GREEN PV Designer
Successful participation in this exam qualifies you to become a GREEN PV Designer. This qualification is especially relevant when you want to work on the design of PV systems.
The exam tests your knowledge of the electrical and performance properties of solar panels and inverters, and puts your load sizing and system layout skills to the test. It tests topics taught on Day 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the SuperSolarSchool and Day 1 and Day 2 of Commercial PV Design.
You will answer questions on:
- Solar radiation
- Different solar PV module technologies
- The definition of strings and arrays
- How to establish the Voc and Isc of a solar module; you will be required to reproduce the IV curve showing the MPP
- Differences between grid-tied and standalone inverters, as well as inverter-PV generator ratios
- Calculating the size of a system based on the customer’s location, load profile and useage patterns
- Selecting the right components for your system, with a focus on mounting considerations when installing on a flat roof
GREEN PV Installer
Successful participation in this exam qualifies you to become a GREEN PV Installer. This qualification is especially relevant when you want to perform the physical installation of PV solar systems.
The exam will ensure you understand the physical properties and correct handling of all your components, including mounting structures and cabling, and is great preparation for the 2-Day PV GreenCard assessment. This exam covers topics taught on Day 1, 2 and 3 of the SuperSolarSchool.
You will be tested on:
- Solar radiation
- Mounting solutions for different roof types and optimal orientation of PV modules; you will also need to draw a schematic of a solar PV grid-tied system
- Correct handling, mounting and connection of PV modules
- Best cabling practices
- Selecting the ideal site for the inverter, and when to select landscape versus portrait mounting of modules
- Calculating the number of modules and BOS materials required for a site
